Vitiligo (White Spot) Surgery
Vitiligo (white spot) surgery
vitiligo is a type of white spot over skin. It can involve any part of body, like fingertips, lips, hand, feet, scalp, face, etc.
Why vitiligo occurs?
In skin, a special type of cells called “melanocyte’’ are present, whose work is to make skin pigments giving normal colour to skin. When antibodies against these melanocytes form inside body, it destroys these pigment forming cells leading to gradual whitening of skin. Therefore, mostly it is an autoimmune disease.
Who needs vitiligo surgery?
- Patient of vitiligo who has tried all sorts of medical treatment but fail to regain skin colour.
- Sometimes many patches respond to medicine & get cured but few patches don’t respond & for that we need to do surgery.
Criteria for vitiligo surgery: –
It can only be done in patient in whom vitiligo is stable, i.e., no new patch has formed in last 6 months or not any existing patches have shown any increase in size.

Vitiligo surgery is an outpatient minor procedure i.e., patient doesn’t need admission. It requires almost 1-2 hour. There is not much complication, or, risk associated with procedure.
